Let us switch!

THR = tobacco harm reduction. Simple.

Everyone knows the best way to reduce the harm done by tobacco is to stop smoking. But that's not easy, even if you want to. Tobacco Harm Reduction (THR) is about helping people to quit.

THR is a BIG opportunity to save a lot of lives – globally and here at home. The World Health Organization estimates a Billion people will die prematurely this century if they keep on smoking.

Yet the most popular and effective means of helping smokers to quit is banned here.

That's why the Australian Taxpayers' Alliance and MyChoice Australia have teamed up to demand change. Smokers should be able to choose for themselves to switch away from cigarettes to safer alternatives – and that includes personal vaporisers, e-cigarettes or vapes, now established in many places as helping millions of people to stop smoking and improve their health. In the EU, they have helped more than 6 million quit smoking. In the UK, more than a million smokers used them as part of their quit attempts in 2015.

Together they are known as “ENDS”. They give smokers the nicotine they want without the deadly tar and particles that smoking generates. If you don't set fire to it, nicotine is no more dangerous than caffeine.

But ENDS are denied to smokers here, while the much more deadly tobacco cigarettes are perfectly legal. It's a waste of a new technology that works.

PLEASE JOIN US in demanding change in Australia and New Zealand to allow people to use appropriately regulated ENDS if they want. Sign our petition, tell your friends and family, and if you know any smokers, tell them too. It's a matter of choice – but it's also about improving public health. We will put your demand directly in touch with your MP and the federal health minister.

There is now a chance to make a difference – to follow the lead of other countries on harm reduction, instead of repeating the misinformation that vaping is the same as smoking. It's not – and that's the point.

The evidence is overwhelming: vaping is is “at least 95 percent safer than smoking”*. It's illogical – even unethical, if you are in medicine or public health – to treat it as more dangerous than tobacco.

We want people to be allowed to choose to SWITCH to clearly much safer alternatives that help them get away from smoking. And we want ENDS – appropriately regulated for product quality and safety, and to ensure they are not available to kids – available for consumers to buy throughout Australia and New Zealand without the stigma of smoking.

I have bought e cigs in the past from overseas but it’s extremely costly that’s the main reason I stopped using them if they were made available here in Australia I certainly would switch back to using them as a healthier alternative and from what I do know the big tobacco companies are already investing in this market already.
